Guide · Tattoo on holiday
Tattooed in Madeira.
A practical guide to getting a tattoo while visiting the island — from booking before you fly to healing around beach days. Written by Hugo Gonzalez, tattoo artist in central Funchal.
1. Book before you fly
Good studios in Funchal work by appointment, and summer diaries fill quickly. Send your idea, placement, size and travel dates on WhatsApp before the trip. Hugo replies within 12 hours with a tailored estimate, consults remotely and prepares your custom design in advance — so your holiday time goes into the session, not the back-and-forth.
2. Time it around the sea and the sun
A fresh tattoo cannot go into the sea or pool, and must stay out of direct sun, for around 2–4 weeks. The practical answer: do your beach days, levada walks and pool afternoons first, and schedule the session for the last day or two of the trip. Madeira's mild climate actually helps healing — just keep the piece shaded and moisturised.
3. The session, in central Funchal
Hugo's atelier is on Rua do Bom Jesus 10, in the centre of Funchal — a short walk from the old town. Sessions are private and unhurried, with single-use sterile materials, and service in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The studio holds a 5.0 rating on Google across 50 reviews, many from visitors who did exactly this.
4. Flying home and healing
Flying with a fresh tattoo is fine. Keep it clean and lightly moisturised, wear loose clothing over it, and follow the aftercare guide — it covers the first hours, the first weeks, and Madeira-specific advice on sun and sea.
Ideas that travel well
Most visitors choose fine line pieces or a Madeira memory tattoo — hibiscus, levadas, postage-stamp scenes of the island. Small and medium pieces heal fast and fit comfortably inside a one-week trip.
Holiday tattoo questions.
Should I book before I arrive?
Yes — appointment diaries fill up. Send your idea and dates on WhatsApp before you fly; Hugo consults remotely, prepares the design and reserves a session inside your dates. Replies within 12h.
When during the trip should I do it?
Towards the end. A fresh tattoo can't go in the sea, pool or direct sun — so beach first, tattoo last. If the tattoo is the priority, invert it and plan the rest in the shade.
Can I fly home with a fresh tattoo?
Yes — flying is no problem. Keep it clean, moisturised and under loose clothing, and follow the aftercare guide during the first days at home.
Do you take walk-ins?
Hugo works by appointment only, with the design studied and drawn before the session — that preparation is exactly why the result is worth planning for.
